When does British Airways owe you compensation?
EU Regulation 261/2004 covers every British Airways flight departing from an EU airport, and flights into the EU on an EU carrier. If a delay makes you arrive 3 hours or later at your final destination, or your flight was cancelled less than 14 days in advance, you are entitled to €250 to €600 — based on flight distance, not your ticket price.
A missed connection within a single booking counts too: what matters is the total delay at your final destination. And your claim does not expire quickly — in the Netherlands you can claim up to 2 years after the flight date.
When does British Airways not have to pay?
Compensation is only waived in ‘extraordinary circumstances’ — think extreme weather, air traffic control strikes or closed airspace. A technical fault or a strike by the airline's own staff usually does not qualify, according to the courts.
